[ He keeps hacking in reply. It's a painful few minutes before he finally spits up what feels like half the ocean. ]

Oorgh... not my... best first impression. [ He pushes the sodden, sandy mass of hair out of his face, and looks over at her. Wow. Yeah. That's... that's a fish tail there.

He really, really hopes he's not the first human she's gotten a good look at. ]

You, uh. [ He coughs again, prying his eyes away from the fin of her lower half. ] You saved my life.

Oh, I suppose so.

[A pause.]

Did you not want that to happen?

[Humans are very odd creatures at times. Luce has been told that by her mother, and no doubt she was told the same by hers. It's the kind of knowledge that just tends to get passed down.]

No--I did. I... Thank you.

[ His chest is burning, his eyes stinging, his head spinning. It feels utterly miserable, but he's alive. ]

If you hadn't been here, I would've... ah! [ He sits up as best he can, leaning on his hands. ] I... I heard someone out there, was it... was it you?

[Then that's good. She should probably take her leave now, while he's still a bit off, and Luce begins to push herself up.]

[It's the question that has her pause. Oh, if only she weren't a sucker for conversation.]

Oh, yes! I've sung here every day since I can remember.

[Her, and her mother, and her mother's mother, on and on. This has always been a part of their territory.]

Oh, good. I thought someone else might be in danger out there...

[ He can breathe a little easier, literally and metaphorically. ]

[Getting a compliment from a human is quite the rare thing.]

This stretch of shore doesn't often get human visitors like you to listen to it.

Every other human I met told me it was dangerous out here.

[ He laughs, throat still hoarse from the trials it's been through. ]

I mean, I guess they were right, but I'm glad I took the risk.

Quite an optimistic view on life!

[One that her chipper tone seems to approve of. There's a tilt of her head as he coughs, but she doesn't reach over or anything.]

Why come out here, then?

[ He blinks, caught off guard by the question. He pushes back his sandy, dripping hair, looking between her, and the ocean view. ]

I guess... I thought I'd get to see something new.

[There's a grin- some teeth just a bit sharper than may necessarily be comfortable- and a splash of her tail.]

Did you?

[ Instead of getting unnerved, he just grins back at her. ]

Well, I don't think we've met before, have we?

I've never met a human before, so no!

[Her laugh has the same strange quality as her singing.]

Do you have a name?

[ He leans in toward her, grin gone a bit goofy. He would like to hear more of that laugh.

With her question, he takes the opportunity to jab a thumb at his chest, as confident as a half-drowned man can look. ]

They call me Mr. Universe. I tour the land, bringing music to all humans who come to hear!

[ Which is very few. ]

Oh! [Her webbed hands clap together in utter delight.] That sounds wonderful!

You must be very important then.

[What do you mean it's not the same to humans as it is to mermaids?]

More an unsung hero. Since I'm the one doing the singing.

Ah--but what about you? What's your name?

[A joker of some sort, she thinks, but her fins perk up slightly at the question returned.]

Oh, Luce! With the Giglio Nero clan. I suppose humans don't have those, do they?

Uhh, dunno. Is that different from a family?

Well, what do humans consider a family?

Um... the people who help raise you, and look after you. Your friends, and loved ones.

Oh, then yes! It's very much like that!

Hah! So mermaids are just the wet versions of us! Or we're... the dry versions of you, I guess.

I think it's the second one, myself. [Another laugh.] You should sing for me! I've never gotten to hear a human sing before.
