[ no particular preference! As a human, I'll probably go with the 'scientist' route seeing as how she's studying marine biology in her canon. ]

[ In spite of all the alleged mermaid sightings in the area, it's probably been some time since Sonico began trying to seek one out with no success whatsoever. That's probably because there are some VERY strict cultural laws about human-mermaid interactions, laws with significant consequences for disobedience. It would take a mermaid with very little respect for the old ways and either a lot of balls or a complete lack of care for their well-being to breach them, and where would she ever find one of those?

Maybe leaning over the edge of her raft, find beneath the water with his arms folded on its surface as he watches her scan the water on the opposite side. She hasn't noticed him yet - he could leave right now, and no one would be any the wiser. ]

You know, if you sank out here and drowned I don't think anyone would ever find you.

[ But clearly, he's a conversationalist. ]

[ she's been out on the water long enough that her eyes are starting to feel strained from all the squinting she's been doing out across the horizon. She hasn't seen so much as a splash in the water while she's been here and she's starting to suspect she never will.

and of course, that goes out the window once she hears a voice and she jumps so violently that the raft rocks in the water, splashing water everywhere. barely managing not to yelp, she scrabbles to the other side of the raft, as far as she can go without actively looking like she's fleeing. ]

[ she's not sure where the rest of that sentence was supposed to go and swallows hard to try and make her suddenly dry voice a little less raspy. ]

[ There's a smirk that tugs on the corner of his lips at her reaction - a smug expression, which she might eventually come to learn is his default state of being. ]

Sure, but you'd be surprised just how deep it gets around here. All sorts of nooks and crannies down at the bottom - things get lost in there all the time.

[ He shrugs, slipping back under the water without much in the way of warning. It might seem like he just decided to end the conversation, except a moment later he bursts back up from the water's surface to more or less invite himself onto her raft, landing solidly and splashing water everywhere in the process. Now, if she hadn't already assumed as much, she can confirm it for real - he's a merman, sharklike from the waist down. ]

Lucky for you, I don't really feel like capsizing your little dinghy.
