Japanese? Still a foreign language! But body cues? Body cues are easy enough to understand, and Joker follows Ginko's gaze. Right, too long in the air and, well. An obvious problem arises. Scrunching up his mouth, he twists his body around until he can flop in the proper direction without tail-slapping Ginko. Unfortunately, well...

Sand, at least, allows for some degree of easy dragging. A lot of the time, it's a little wet to some effect, and the tiny little rocks it was all composed off allows traction for his hand to dig into. On relatively smooth wood, with one hand, and everything else...

Well.

It's kind of obvious what's going to happen even before Joker starts forcing himself along. Being beached has nothing on being stuck on the deck of a ship, as it turns out. That's something which would be hard for any creature relying purely on their upper body for a lack of legs. With only one good arm, well, that's something that's made all the harder, and Joker's own clearly strain while his hand scrambles against the planks. After a few seconds of dragging a very heavy lower half, he temporarily gives up and flops face down against the deck. The peculiar sound that comes from him is like a series of bubbles popping in his throat.

...Oh. Oh no.

He'd sort of hoped that the merman might be able to use his tail to help move himself, or something, but of course they wouldn't be that lucky.

"Okay-- okay, uh. Hang on." So much for avoiding touching a fish titty. Ginko scoots over to Joker's side and gives his back a couple awkward pats before taking a look around. He doesn't think he'll be able to move him all that easily, either, so...

After a few moments, his eye lands on some of his supplies, thankfully still secured to the deck where they had been. He grabs a wooden bucket and dips it over the deck, then throws the seawater over the merman. Hopefully, that should buy them some time - and make the deck slicker and easier to move him on.

"Now let's try this." He stoops down and wraps one arm around the merman's waist, the other around... roughly where he'd guess the knees would be on a human? Around his tail. The point is, he's gonna see if he can haul him closer to the edge of the boat.

Hearing all that movement at least gets Joker to shift his head to the side, watching as Ginko goes around. Even unfamiliar as he might be with some things, seeing that bucket go into the water has him perk up, and his tail is already flapping against the deck when Ginko finally comes over.

It's not quite sand... but the slick pool of water now pooling around him is sure a help all its own. There's a high musical note that goes through the air, not pained at all, and Joker is already trying to help move himself along before Ginko is there with him.

Hopefully Ginko doesn't accidentally get elbowed or hit with a tail....

That's a new sound. But, at least it sounds like a good one!

Ginko flinches, narrowly avoiding getting a tailfin to the face. "--Hey, careful, there!" Warning aside, he can't keep himself from grinning as they move toward the edge of the boat, until, finally, he can try and haul Joker over the side - then grab onto the edge of the boat, to make sure the shift in weight on the deck doesn't send him over, too.

There's no really graceful way to get shoved over the side of a boat and go flailing down into the water, but, well. It seems to work well enough as he hits the water with a loud slap, soon disappearing down into the water... Only to resurface with a beaming face, giving a quick whistle.

So merpeople seem to know how to do that at least.

Ginko clutches the side of the boat, watching him disappear. It's almost a surprise when the merman resurfaces again, and Ginko straightens up, grinning despite everything else.

"Well, there you go! Must be a lot more comfortable in there, huh?"

Another whistle is all that filters up to Ginko, for lack of any proper Japanese conversation. Joker twists himself in the water, a flicker of shimmering scales, until he can float along on his back with his hair fanning out into a brilliant orange wave in the water.

This is definitely much better... and he's apparently not going anywhere, considering he whistles again before saying in a sing-song tone, "Ginkoooo!"

Ginko grins, and ducks his head to hide a quiet chuckle. It's sort of thrilling - encountering a being like this to begin with, then being able to help him, make tiny steps in communicating with him.

Unfortunately, as much as he'd like to kneel down by the side of the boat and keep chatting with the merman (as much as this can be called chatting), there are still his current circumstances to take into account, and he can't afford to waste too much time.

Ginko straightens up, still smiling. "...I should probably see how many of my supplies survived the storm. But, if you still want to hang around, I'd certainly appreciate the company."

Ginko can go if he likes. Yet while he's at the edge of the boat, Joker just makes soft whistles and faintly musical noises in the back of his throat. Only when the man leaves for a moment will he come back to empty waters, no red hair or brilliant scales in sight.

....At least for a few hours.

Being stuck in that net for so long had really been annoying in more ways than one. It had been uncomfortable to be stuck, and maybe a little panic-inducing when he'd felt himself start to go dry... But there had been one other thing, and that thing was a lack of food. He needs to find some food down in the waters for himself, something which can take a little bit of time with how large the seas are. Eventually, however, he returns back to that shadow bobbing along the surface of the water, blood trailing from the fish he has in his mouth and in one hand. How are things going with that not-mer?

When he looks over again and finds the merman missing, Ginko can't help being kind of disappointed. But, he supposes he shouldn't be surprised - he probably does have other things to do.

So he focuses on going through his supplies. He hadn't secured much to the boat to begin with, seeing as how this wasn't meant to be a particularly long trip; he's got that bucket, some food and water, the tarp and nets that had made things so complicated already. There are a few other containers he brought along too, of various shapes and sizes, to hold samples in, his compass and map for navigation, and some basic medical supplies for emergencies.

All in all, it's not much - especially once he weeds out what had been ruined in the storm. But, for now, it's all he's got to work with.

By the time Joker resurfaces, Ginko has his shirt draped over his shoulders, having dunked it in the water for the sake of keeping cool, and is focused on setting a course for the little boat. He doesn't even seem to notice the merman moving under the surface of the water, at first.

So a lot beneath his clothing looks similar to Joker's own body, with a few minor differences here and there. It's not like he's up close and personal again, able to explore everything to his content. Unfortunate, that. For now, he continues to swim alongside the boat at a content pace, swallowing in gulps of seawater and blood that get filtered out.

But waiting can be pretty boring... which is why Ginko will hear the sound of a dead fish smacking down onto the deck of his little boat. Joker, if nothing else, has good aim.

Fortunately, Ginko finishes getting the boat set up to... probably basically go in one direction, just moments before the fish slaps down on the deck.

His first thought is to look out at the water around the boat, making sure that it isn't just... kicking up again and throwing fish on his boat. But the water, darkening as the sun gets lower in the sky, is just as still as it was when the merman left.

He picks the fish up off the deck, and the most likely source clicks in his mind. Ginko moves back over to the side of the boat and leans over, grinning at the sight of the merman. "--Hey! I didn't think I'd see you again."

Flopping into a back float once more, Joker removes the fish from his mouth, leaving behind a large smear of blood along his lips and jaw in a way that's probably super reassuring when he grins up at the human. "Ginkooo~." At least the tone seems positive. As is the fish, probably? Listen, it's a gift now, he guesses.

After a second, however, he licks away some of the blood before trying. "Hey, I didn't think I'd see you again." He has no idea what it means, only that it's.... also probably positive and not a swear. Probably.

Yeah, Ginko isn't really sure how else to take the fish thing but as a gift, honestly? Unless it's a threat, but it seems a little late for that.

Ginko straightens up, raising his eyebrows. "That's... impressive. You've got quite a knack for mimicry, huh?" Boy, he wishes that storm hadn't wrecked all his note-taking supplies. "You really are good at that--" Time for another try at that name, he guesses. "--Jokah."

That... might be closer, or further off. He's not sure.

Well, Joker is certainly whistling in what seems to be approval at the attempt, so, you know. Read into that as you want, Ginko. "Ginkoooo," he sings, drawing the name out a little. He still doesn't have any idea what he's saying, but it's fun to say his name regardless.

Although all this talking is making him a bit hungry, and he tears back into the fish. Look, they can eat together, right? Just shove some raw and bloody fish into your mouth, Ginko, it's all good.

"D'you know that's my name, or do you just like saying it?" As glad as he'd be to keep up that line of investigation, Joker biting into the whole damn fish has actually reminding him that he... hasn't eaten all day, has he. Whoops.

Ginko could eat some of the food he brought with him, but that would probably be rude. So, he'll hold onto that for now, and... figure out how to make this fish edible on a boat.

He pulls over his tarp to set the fish on and sets about stripping off the scales, leaning against the side of the boat while he works. "Sorry that it'll take me a bit to join you, but I can't just bite into a whole fish like you can. Humans aren't really made for that."

Unfortunately, Japanese to that level is still a mystery to Joker, and he just tears into the fish some more with something akin to a shrug. It can be a little difficult to tell, with both his position and the fact that he only has one arm. Still, that Ginko isn't immediately tearing in but rather doing something with his hands...

Curious, he twists back onto his stomach, diving under the water so that he can turn right back around and try to wiggle up to see over the side of the boat. What's going on here, now?

Ginko glances up at the side of the boat when Joker emerges again, giving him a brief smile. Frankly, he... really is glad for this dead fish, even if he can't get to eating it as immediately as Joker did. "I hope this doesn't come off as insulting or anything."

With the descaling done, he slices the fish open to pull out its innards, which he considers for a moment before holding the mess of guts out to Joker. "You can have these, if you want them."

Hold on, let him just carefully put his own fish to the side of the boat. There are still some good bits he can dig into there, after all, but he won't refuse some more food himself. It's just that now he's really curious. With a bit of a balancing act happening, he puts his weight on his elbow and accepts the innards.

They don't immediately go into his maw, however. Instead, he runs his thumb across the slick surface. "These?" he parrots. "Them?"

"Yeah, uh--" Boy, that probably wasn't the best way to communicate that. He'll have to be more careful about how he's phrasing things, if he wants talking to this guy to get any easier. "The innards. Or guts." Y'know, whatever you want to call them.

Ginko slices a piece of flesh off the gutted fish in front of him and pops it into his mouth, and even just that chunk of raw fish is a huge relief after the day he's had. He cuts away another piece and holds it up so Joker can see it. "I can only eat the meat - not the guts."

While Ginko struggles over the struggles that come with interspecies communication, Joker slowly begins to pass the guts into his mouth and down his gullet. For a regular human, the choking issue would come into play. In contrast, Joker doesn't seem to be affected very much. They're not so thick as to be difficult to swallow, unlike much larger prey. No tearing things up with is teeth, or all that. Just one long piece. It leaves his lower face even more bloodied up, but hey. What the hell is etiquette. He'll get it fixed whenever he dives down into the water again.

With that last swallow, he hums thoughtfully. "Innards or guts," he repeats slowly. He thinks he has this. Maybe. It's taking a lot of listening, however, and picking through the words. The rest of the sentence is a little too complex right now, however. Too many unknowns.

That... is interesting. Ginko watches with something like fascination; he'd kind of expected Joker to tear them up like he had to the whole fish, or at least chew them. Not... swallow the whole length of the intestines in one go. Do merpeople's gag reflexes not work like humans'? Assuming they have a gag reflex at all.

"Yeah. Guts." He'll stick with the shorter word from here. He eats the second slice of fish, and considers cutting more off. But... screw that, he absolutely doesn't have the patience to eat this thing bit by bit. He picks the fish up and bites into the exposed meat. Shit this mouthful of barely-prepared raw fish is way better than it should be. He pulls a couple bones out before mumbling through it, "Thanks."

At some point in the future, Ginko might get some very interesting first-hand knowledge of the gag reflex in merpeople.... But not right now. Instead, the now has Joker hauling himself a little bit further up along the side of the boat, until he's half draped on it. It takes a little bit of blind fondling, but he soon brings his usual fish back to his mouth. That amount of guts is a pretty comfortable weight in his stomach, but, hey, he can always have more. It wasn't like it was another whole fish.

This is a better- if slightly awkward- view of the way Ginko chows down into the fish, and Joker laughs again. "Thanks!"

It's kind of stunning how fast he's picking up each word, even if Ginko can't be sure how well he understands what they mean. And, of course, if he wants to make sure he does figure out what they mean, he's going to need to pick his words a little more carefully.

Unfortunately, never having had kids or anything, he doesn't exactly have a lot of experience with teaching people Japanese. If he wants to be able to communicate with this merman, he'll just have to do his best - and see how much of his companion's communication he can figure out in turn.

"Careful not to tip it-- the boat." He pats the side that Joker is hanging onto with the hand that's not occupied with holding onto a fish. "I need the boat to stay upright."

He guesses he should just treat it like talking to a kid?? Who knows how long that will last.

Spoilers: Joker barely has a fucking clue what he's saying. Ginko should probably watch his language, but it's very likely that he won't.

Flipping himself onto his back, because that's definitely a life choice this dumb fish won't regret in five minutes, Joker tears off a piece of the fish he still has thoughtfully. It doesn't take as much chewing as one might think before it goes down. Still, some chewing is definitely different than just shoving in guts wholesale.

"Boat?" he echoes back thoughtfully.
