[The details of how she'd come to be this way were still a little fuzzy. How long had it been like this? How long would it be like this? What had things been like before? It was weird, but the harder she tried to remember the less she seemed to recall. It was like the details of the way things had been before were dancing just out of her reach, and she wasn't sure how to feel about that.

But for the most part, though, she was enjoying the way things were now. There was an overwhelming feeling of freedom that dominated pretty much everything, and she just loved it. Then again, she couldn't recall ever knowing anything different, even though she was sure that it must have been the case at one point. But whenever she tried to think about it too much it made her head hurt, so she'd decided not to worry about it as much.

If things had been different, she might have stopped to wonder about how easily she'd made the adjustment. But for now she's content to swim around. Going near the surface wasn't something that was generally a good idea, but she couldn't quite help it sometimes. Normally, she liked to wait until a time when it was unlikely that she'd be crossing paths with humans because it just felt like a smart idea. Instead, she's currently playing with a group of small, colorful fish.]

[He's... tired. He thinks that's the right way of putting it. With every day, every hour, every minute, and every second dictated usually by someone else, Adrien's tired. Even his days 'off' somehow magically become filled by something and he just wanted a moment to himself. And a book he found might've provided him with the answer he needed.]

[A full moon, a treasure from the sea... and then himself. All these things at once, and the spell should work. He was nervous though. What if this wasn't right? He wanted freedom, but not... uh, that escape.]

O-Okay... just count to three. You can do this... you've been ordered to do sillier things than this for work.

[Way less risk of course. He moved closer to the water, ignoring the cold seeping into his skin as it lapped at his ankles.]

[Things had been going just fine until something spooked the fish. At the moment, they were far enough away from the shore to avoid being discovered but close enough for movement to potentially startle the smaller creatures.

Blinking, Marinette turned her face toward the direction of shore and hummed softly under her breath. After sending the little fishes away, she decided to go forth on her own to get a better look. If it was dangerous, the only one she was risking was herself.

She crept closer, careful to stay far enough away to be safe, and silently poked the top of her head up out of the water in an attempt to get a better look.

And stopped when her eyes fell on a head of golden hair illuminated by the moonlight. She felt... something when she looked at him, but couldn't quite put her finger on it. Was that good, or bad? She couldn't decide, and she couldn't fight the urge to creep a bit closer, either.]

[He was still nervous, but he clutched the charm be brought all the same. Forward he continued to walk, further into the water where the waves began to lap at his waist and then its torso.]

One... two...

[He hesitated, but his hand shook. Teeth gnashing, he swallowed.]

... Three!

[Before taking the actual plunge beneath the surface.]

[Okay, nothing crazy had happened yet. Maybe this would be okay.

... Or he could just casually walk forward into the deeper part of the water.

She wanted to shout at him to stop, that it wasn't safe if he didn't know how to swim.

But he made the decision before she could even force herself to move. When he went under, she rushed forward, no longer particularly worried about being spotted because his safety was more important than staying out of sight. And he didn't look that dangerous.]

Don't do that! It isn't safe!

[It never occurred to her to wonder if he could even speak underwater, but then she wasn't thinking straight at the moment. She didn't understand why but seeing him go under like that made her heart ache.]

[It's freezing and part of him realized he wasn't sure what he was waiting for now at this point. Was he supposed to feel himself change? And if he did, would it hurt? Was it suppose to be instant or would he probably drown first? So many questions...]

[And then, a voice spoke. That was peculiar, but even underwater, it sounded like it was near. Just managing to open his eyes, both of them shot open wide and he gasped, drawing water into his mouth. Hurriedly, he closed it again, but the damage was done. He panicked.]

[So maybe charging at him at full speed wasn't the best idea, but she wasn't exactly thinking straight. Humans weren't supposed to just dive under the water like that, and she couldn't figure out why this one had felt the need to do so. What was he trying to do?]

Wait!

[That probably wasn't the best thing to say in this situation, but it was the first thing that popped into her head before she crashed into him. Without really thinking about it, she slid her arms around him and pulled him close. Her first thought was to try and get him back up out of the water again, but what were the odds of him fighting her on it?

The fact that he'd swallowed some water and was now panicking wasn't helping her nerves, either.]

It's going to be okay!

[He doesn't know what she's doing, but he was a little distracted by just... well, looking at her. Here he was beginning to drown and the girl holding onto him wasn't - or didn't appear to be - human. Was this from swallowing too much water? He was hallucinating from lacking oxygen?]

[Either way, he wasn't fighting her.]

[This had escalated quickly and she honestly wasn't sure what to think. Her mind was reeling, because why would a human be trying to drown themselves? What could possibly be that bad?

But now was hardly the time to worry about that. It was more important to get him to the surface where drowning wouldn't be an issue. That thought in mind, she tightened her grip on him and held him close as she rushed upward.]

[He continued to let her do as she pleased, feeling a bit strange while she did so. He should've read up more on drowning because what were the signs? Still, he managed to collect himself enough to realize their trajectory was up towards the surface.]

[... And immediately, he began to squirm.]

[They were almost there when he started to struggle, and she was so startled by the sudden movement that she lost her grip on him for a second.

She was able to recover soon enough, but there was no telling if he'd be able to get free because of it.]

I'm trying to help you. Stop!

[Save him? Trying to save him? She was stronger than he expected, but he was feeling heavy.]

[He can't maintain his struggle and soon just left her able to take him back up. His hand though kept the charm clutched tight.]

[Mostly, she was just confused as to why he'd want to do this in the first place. Being a human wasn't that bad, was it? She couldn't really imagine things being bad enough to make him want to drown himself.

It didn't take long at all to reach the surface once he'd settled down again, and once his head was above the water, she relaxed her grip on him.]

What were you doing?

[He coughed, spitting out water he'd previously swallowed beneath, ignoring how the corner of his eyes stung. He recovered his breath and looked at Marinette.]

... T-Trying something. I... didn't intent to start drowning.

You weren't trying to drown yourself?

[Humans were so weird sometimes. She could have sworn that was what he was doing, but apparently she'd been mistaken.

Marinette tilted her head at him.]

What were you trying to do? Maybe I can help.

[This was perhaps the other reason he hadn't told anyone of his plan. Because... well, it wasn't going to sound sane.]

... I was told there was a way to temporarily become a merfolk. I looked into it and thought tonight would be the night.

[Of all the possible reasons he could have for not trying to drown himself, she wouldn't have guessed that one.]

I... Do you not like being the way you are?

[He had to consider because he actually wasn’t sure... but he finally shook his head.]

No, I just... I wanted to get away from this life for a while.

[That made her frown, mostly because she hadn't ever heard of a way for someone to temporarily become a mer. The only way she knew of involved drowning...]

Is it that bad?

[She wasn't really trying to be condescending. He seemed genuinely upset and it made her heart ache, which was just weird in general because she barely even knew this human.]

If I’m trying this... I guess it has gotten to a low point...

[He sighed. And if he told anyone, his dad would probably just make it worse trying to make him better.]

[What was she supposed to say to that? She honestly couldn't imagine things getting so bad that she'd want to try something similar.

Instead of even trying to come up with something to say, she slid her arms around him and pulled him close.

Maybe not the best idea, or even what he was expecting, but there it was.]

[He’s certainly embarrassed by his actions now and can’t believe he’d have to explain to his father. He just wanted a few hours, maybe a day to be away from it all.]

[His eyes grow when she realized though... she’s hugging him.]

Why... are you...? You don’t even know me...

[It wasn't something she thought much about, so it hadn't even occurred to her that doing such a thing might seem a little weird to someone else]

[And she'd been pretty sure he was trying to drown himself.]

You just looked like you needed it.

[It seemed a little silly to thank someone for that, but she wasn't going to hold it against him. Mostly because it seemed like he did genuinely need it just then.]
