Do they not know what's accompanying them in space, or is that what they're actively chasing?

Shoichi has never considered himself, in his entire life, an outdoors person.

Nope, he's been a nerd since childhood, although he can't say if the glasses added to that or not. That means he's never really gone hiking too much, or surfing, or any kind of sports that had him outside a lot of the time. Yet even as much of a nerd he is, that doesn't make him any less determined when he's going after something...

And where he's going has lead him to a little island off in the middle of the sea, not even large enough to foster a proper town of any sort. It can, however, host a little research station with barely enough funding to get by, inhabited by a sole scientist who can't even get an intern to help him out. Not that Shoichi blames anyone, necessarily. It's a rough life, with air conditioning that he has to occasionally kick to work and hanging through ocean storms. Not everyone wants to deal with it.

The only reason he does is because he's sure he's onto something, here. It's not only the stories he hears from locals about all sorts of odd things, but, rather, the data he's gathered from the local sealife around the place. In a bunch of different little ways, things are different in the area around this place... and that's what he really wants to learn.

Of course, sometimes mixing in the mundane tasks with his work ones are necessary, and it's only when he's returning from a small shopping run to the mainland (well, it's just a larger island, but it's a mainland in comparison to a smaller one) that he slows the ship down some distance away from what is currently 'home'.

It's a new project of his: a robot that's almost eel-like in its shape, able to traverse the water much more efficiently with its movements instead of something like a submarine with its rotors. Carefully, he lowers it down into the water from over the side of his modest boat. Maybe, with this, he'll be able to get into places he otherwise wouldn't be with scuba gear or the usual cameras.... Or see things that would be too put off by a regular robot.

There's only one way to find out.
