Nearby, someone moves, and Shoichi still has to stifle the instinctive feelings of danger, careful, keep your guard up. The years have passed, so it's no longer so strong a reaction, but old habits die hard, he supposes. While he's busy wrangling those, he's honestly not expecting a voice to suddenly speak up right by him. Blinking in wide eyed surprise, his fingers drop from his face and he looks over to the other student.
Oh. He doesn't know him- or, well, he doesn't think he does or that they share classes- but he's seen him around. It's hard not to, with bright red hair like that, a shade to outdo his own and so much longer, too. Pretty, if Shoichi is honest with himself, and the other man is much prettier this close.
At least this is college and not the mafia. He doesn't have to worry about a pretty person potentially wanting to either murder him or try to curry favor- no, no, that was the other Shoichi for that one. And still doesn't apply to college anyway.
Before he can stop himself, a quiet laugh fumbles out of his mouth, and he reaches up with one hand to cover it even as his other goes to discretely rest against the keyboard (and a single finger tucks away the file he'd had up). "Ah- sorry. Just.... gardening." Captain Shoichi Irie, of the Rosa Squad, present and accounted for. Now let's move on with today's agenda- "It just... reminds me of something. Someone I kind of know, you could say." Glancing away from his fellow redhead, he lets fingers flutter against hard plastic. Yeah... Someone he kind of knows.
"He's always been really into flowers too... I never really found out why."
His eyes tracked his movements carefully and he continued to smile. How interesting. He'd reacted to him. First with fear, prey scent still lingering. Then laughter but not a fully pleasant kind. Then he'd hidden something. Oh.. oh how very lucky. Secrets. His smile actually warmed and he gave a light laugh of true pleasure.
" Flowers are a delightful pass time. I prefer for more useful plants, most of the time. Though my favorite is a simple red rose I must admit."
Yours would be, considering my luck are the words which flick through his head, but Shoichi bites them back from actually leaving his mouth. No need to talk about that.
"I'm not really knowledgeable there, honestly," he admits. "I'm not really a botany major of any kind. Oh, right- Sorry, I didn't introduce myself." Not that he was the one to start this conversation anyway... A polite bow of his head. "Irie Shoichi. Engineering and physics."
" Forgive me, I was the one who intruded. Minamoto Shuichi, Botany and Business. " He returned the shallow bow of the head. He sat next to him. " I could not help speaking up when I heard you. I tend to be slightly awkward when interacting with others, I hope I did not offend with my nosiness. But you seemed upset and I wished to ease your tension." he confessed softly rubbing his neck.
"Oh, no, it's fine..." His own shoulders rise up in a slight shrug. "I honestly just wasn't expecting anyone. It's late, and the library isn't exactly the most exciting place to be." The corner of Shoichi's lips quirk up slightly. "I'm a nerd, so that's my excuse."
How cute. He hid a smile badly and gave a little stifled laugh. " I'm afraid I am just as guilty of that sin myself. I find myself bored more often then not sadly. I came to see if I could not study something more challenging in my off time."
Now wasn't that a familiar story. His smile eased up into something a little more genuine. "You too, huh... I thought I'd try to see if there was anything new in, but so far it's been nothing." For a second, he wanted to glance back at his screen but held the urge down. There wasn't anything on there anyway, just the internet and the news. "I just ended up working on old science projects instead."
Sure. 'Old science projects'. Except that was a lie, wasn't it? There's nothing 'old' about what he was working on, and to dismiss them like that, well... He knows what he's doing. But mixing a little bit of truth in with the lies helps make it more believable, right? And he does have some old things he could pull out of his computer if he's called out on it. No harm done.
What an interesting little lie. He tucked the growing curiosities of this boy away for later. He would puzzle over them later. For now he would continue to investigate.
He cocked his head. " What sort of things do you build? " Humans came up with such interesting little things, it was true and innocent interest for now and the mild hope of getting the boy to relax and open up.
"Well, when I was younger, I wanted to go into robotics," he admits- also a truth. On some level, he supposes he still does, but the world has opened up a lot more since he was younger. "But I've thought about looking into architecture and things like that since I've graduated high school."
Nice and innocent, nothing to see here.
"What about you, Minamoto-san? What were you looking up?"
" This and that. " He shrugged with a sigh " I can't seem to settle onto one thing. Nothing keeps my attention very long anymore. I find myself drifting I suppose. Frankly if mother did not wish it so badly, I would already have started working instead and fumbling with subjects I could pass in my sleep. " He could at least amuse himself with selling deathly plants to random people and see what happened. He focused for a moment on something he'd said.
" Architecture?" he hummed thoughtfully interest flickering in his eyes. " I have....a soft spot for the intricacies of buildings." He murmured another confession, half whispered.
Jeez, someone sounded sure of himself... but then again, can he say he's really that different? Passing through classes like in a daze, reviewing things that a part of him had already experienced before, knew without having to be taught again, mind having gotten a decade-ahead boost...
Sometimes he wonders why he's playing with college and not just skipping the whole dull process like Spanner, but he knows why. He knows what he's chasing.
Brushing aside that train of thought, he leans forward with interest of his own. "Really? How so? I've always preferred simplistic styles, personally- I think they're easier to adjust and-" defend wait no, and he stumbles for a second. "-and mess with."
" I spent much of my youth studying Castles of all sorts actually. I found them fascinating. People put so much thought in them you see. A house is a home is a house. But a Castle...forts and palaces... They are special." He let himself sound shy as he remembered the days spent, barely more then a kit, studying the palaces of the Great. He chuckled. " It's a tad foolish I know."
"No, I don't think so- I mean, I'm looking into robots, which can sound just as silly," he offers, trying to be reassuring and not entirely sure how well he's fairing at it. For all that he has memories of being a leader, he thinks that Shoichi was still a little unsure of social interactions sometimes too. Then again, he guesses he'd never really asked for it.
"So.... it's because of the multiple purposes they served, defense and sanctuary both, that's interesting to you?"
Kurama sat back and crossed his legs, chuckling softly " The layers of them. Yes, I suppose." he murmured in agreement. " Why do you enjoy your robots?" he asked in return. " The challenge and complexity and the possibilities, yes?" His own eyes flickered with interest now. He'd never truly cared much of human's technology but possibility...that was a powerful thing.
"Me? Well..." His fingers tapped along plastic again, and his eyes drifted to the innocuous screen his laptop was currently presenting. What a complex question, although perhaps it was made that way from his own experiences. Still, there was one thing he could agree with.
"It probably.... definitely has to do most with the possibilities, I think. I mean-" He holds his hands up, fingers spread apart and a faint smile on his face. "Robotics are challenging! There's a lot of different factors that you have to take into consideration when drawing up a blueprint, but... That could be said of any scientific field. Paleontology, chemistry, psychology... There's interesting challenges in all of them. But the difference that had me going into robotics..."
For a second, he rolls the words around in his head for a moment. This isn't something he's really talked about with anyone else before. Even his talks with Spanner have always been about the details instead of the reasoning. "With robots and anything else mechanical... You can really push the realm of possibility. Push at potential. Striving to make a building that can't truly be invaded, a robot that can overtake people in ability, a weapon no one has seen before..."
Suddenly feeling as though he's rambling, he shakes his head. "Sorry. But I guess that's why I'm interested in physics, too."
He wonders if the boy had felt that flare of his Youkai as he listened as the boy became impassioned to his subject. His eyes glinted gold as he watched him.
" Striving towards the potential of a thing... It is beautiful."
He wanted the boy in his bed and he wanted to explore the potential of him. All of him. Of that lovely mind, the young body and barely tapped power that burned in him.
He hummed softly and tapped his chin. " There is no reason to be sorry for seeing and wanting to draw out possibilities. Or to share that want. I agree fully."
"Still..." He paused as the comm system of the library went off, listening to the tired droning voice lit the time and how the library was closing for the night. Shaking his head, he started to reach for his laptop.
"The night got away from me, yeesh. I hadn't realized it was getting that late..." As his laptop clicked shut, he can't help but glance at the other. "Do you have anywhere you plan to go?"
