Ken hesitates at that. "...is my ring not good enough?"

Ever since the Vongola went to the future and came back, with Yuni sending a flood of future knowledge along with them, the Kokuyo gang has made use of that knowledge. Ken and Chikusa have rings now, Sun and Rain respectively - highlighting their position as opposites all the more blatantly - because obviously none of them are going to let the grass grow under their feet when the promise of new weapons, new ways for Chikusa and Ken to be useful, presents itself. But mass-produced rings still aren't as common as they eventually will be - Mukuro had taken some pains to find the ones they have - and what rings there are tend not to be particularly powerful. And as for boxes, well, those are still incredibly rare, still technology in development, and Ken and Chikusa don't have any at all.

Ken knows his ring doesn't have nearly the power of Ryohei's Vongola ring. It'll probably take him a lot longer, and a lot more effort, to heal Chikusa than it would Ryohei. But it hadn't occurred to him that his ring might not be sufficient to open the box at all. Chikusa's remark has him stopping to wonder.
kokuyoyo: (Tell him next time I'm going to be)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-09-20 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Of course he figured Ken wouldn’t have considered something like this. Chikusa knows, which is why he’s made the effort to speak up about it at all. It’s how things have been between them for as long as he can remember: Ken acts, and Chikusa thinks.

...Good thing he’d been conscious in this case.

In response to Ken’s question, Chikusa shrugs. Frankly, he doubts their rings are really good enough for anything right now. As the technology progresses, he has no doubt that Mukuro-sama will keep them right on its tail so that they always have some measure of edge, but for right now… “There’s nothing else like the Vongola rings… The boxes might only match up to them.” A specific key for a specific lock. As far as Chikusa is concerned, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-09-23 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Can I even use the Vongola ring, byon?" Ken is frowning now in his uncertainty. Now that Chikusa's made him question one assumption, he's actually considering the other possibilities on his own.

Ken's not exactly stupid, not the way most people would think; he just doesn't bother engaging his brain a lot of the time, acting on instinct and impulse rather than thought.

Maybe he's just going to have to fetch Sasagawa himself.
kokuyoyo: (Please don't place wagers on my)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-09-24 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
At that, all Chikusa can do is shrug.

In theory, he thinks it should only have been the Sky Ring which might cause damage to anyone besides the person it’s bestowed itself upon. That makes sense, from what he knows about the Flames and their various attributes. Sky is Harmony, so that’s probably why it can still carry on a will like that, or maybe it’s because anything that disrupts the harmony it has with a foreign entity….

...Or, more likely, all he can do is bullshit and theorize. Rings and flames aren’t his specialty, biology and poisons are.

He does, however, offer what are surely helpful words.

“I told you we should have gone to Shamal.”

Are we going to have to have one of us NPC Ryohei

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-09-24 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ken just scowls at that. "Shamal wouldn't help enough, byon!" And as if that's decided him, he finally pulls himself away from Chikusa, moving away from the wall to glare up at the building.

Then he leaps. He scrambles up the side of the building with the assistance of animal agility and claws, sniffs at the first second-floor window he comes across, then leaps across to the next one down. This one apparently fits Ryohei's scent, and he slides open the window and disappears inside.

Thuds and snarls and yelling are shortly heard. Something shatters. After a minute, the light turns out. Chikusa is left to wonder, and possibly panic. Ryohei's a lot stronger now than he used to be.

Ryohei is definitely stronger than he once was. However, there's good news: he hasn't really advanced when it comes to brain smarts.

So one flipped table, a couple of broken lights, and a busted wall later and Ryohei is beaming at Ken across the room with his fists up like the feral garbage child hadn't just broken into his house. Sure, a few things are a little busted, but that's fine!! Ryohei has never been a particularly material person. There are more important things to consider.

"Hey!! It's you from Kokuyo! Did you finally come to join the boxing club!? I knew you'd extremely come around!!!!"
junkyarddog: (Who was broken by trained personnel)

You are a god among men, James

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-09-26 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
One can only hope that Kyoko is spending the night over Hana's or Haru's houses.

Ken's scowling at Ryohei in the light, perched on the side of his overturned bed, as he tries to parse what that smile could mean. The words irritate and confuse him further. "Hah? I didn't come to join your dumb club!" He bares his teeth. "I came for your box, byon!"
kokuyoyo: (I had to hypnotize my roommate)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-09-27 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
“Then I’ll extremely convince you!” If anything, Ryohei’s grin just seems to grow brighter as his fists raise up in a classic boxing stance. In a faint way, maybe Ken can recognize it. While it’s considerably less bloodthirsty, it’s the same kind of reaction he gets at the prospect of a fight.

“As for my box, no way! I’ve been told it’s extremely important!”
junkyarddog: (I gotta admit I'm a little bit confused)

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-09-27 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, well, I need it for something extremely important, byon!" Ken scowls, made all the more irritable by the fact that if Chikusa wasn't lying bloody and hurt in the bushes below, he'd love to brawl with Ryohei. He'd get his ass kicked, with Ryohei as strong as he is now, but he'd still happily fight him.

But he's got business to take care of.

"I'll give it back when I'm done!" This is a minor concession, and the fact that Ken's offering this guarantee goes a long way to showing just how desperate he is. For one thing, if Ken was going to take Ryohei's box under normal circumstances, he wouldn't bother to give it back unless someone made him. For another, even if he was planning on giving it back, he probably wouldn't bother mentioning it; that would just be a fact revealed in the fullness of time, or a grudging admission after he'd already been beaten in a fight but was hoping he could manage by persuasion what he couldn't through force. (Which is to say, as a last resort.)

Right now, he wants the box so badly he'd forego fighting Ryohei to get it.

"Gimme your ring, too! My ring won't open it, byon!"
kokuyoyo: (I had to hypnotize my roommate)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-09-28 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
For all that Ryohei is in many ways the stereotypical jock, he's not completely a lost cause. Emotions are easier to parse than logic and it finally hits him that this whole encounter isn't just Ken being... Ken. Slightly, he lowers his face and furrows his brow at the feral child currently occupying his overturned bed.

"Why do you need it?"
junkyarddog: (Sometimes it seems to me)

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-09-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ken bares his fangs, bristling all over, and for a moment it looks like Ken might attack Ryohei just because there's no one else around to take out that much rage on. He almost vibrates with it.

Impressively, he manages to compress enough of it into a verbal snarl that he's able to vent that way. "They hurt Kakipi!"

If Ryohei's not familiar with that particular term of endearment, they're going to waste a minute or two longer while Ken has to explain.
kokuyoyo: (I had to hypnotize my roommate)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-09-30 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
As a matter of fact, he’s not, but that doesn’t seem to matter to Ryohei. All he does is lower his fists completely, expression morphing into concern. “Then I’ll go help! Come on, let’s go!” Without any regard for the fact that they’re on the second floor, he storms over to the window.

Then again, with the things he’s been hit with, maybe there’s no need for concern. Ryohei is astonishingly durable.
junkyarddog: (Who was born in a house full of pain)

fuck you too DW I wasn't finished

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-10-01 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ken's kneejerk feeling at Ryohei's unexpected cooperation (he should have expected it, the Kokuyo gang are fully aware that Tsuna's Vongola are weirdly compassionate and invested in their well-being and are actively kind of uncomfortable about it, but deep down Ken never really expects or believes in anyone outside their group being helpful or caring) is relief. It's followed, almost immediately, with the realization that Chikusa's not going to be happy about having to endure Ryohei personally while getting healed, and will be even less happy about the fact that news will inevitably get back to Tsuna and the other guardians with Ryohei's involvement.

But Chikusa gets grumpy about a lot of things, many of which Ken deems not important enough to fuss over - things like cleanliness or the lack thereof, and proper nutrition, and not being allowed to sleep until moss eventually grows over his body and the earth reclaims him. Ken can deal with an unhappy Chikusa. And while this happens to be something neither of them like, in the face of Chikusa's condition, Ken decides they can both just suck it up.

Ken beats Ryohei to the window in a single leap, and jumps from there down to the ground, looking back up at Ryohei expectantly for a moment in an unspoken invitation to follow before a thought occurs and he darts into the bushes where Chikusa is. He doesn't know how far out Ryohei will jump, and Ryohei doesn't know Chikusa's practically right below him, and Ken doesn't want Ryohei to actually jump down onto Chikusa. But, he figures, if Ryohei knows Ken is right below him, he'll make sure to jump a little further out.

When Ken scurries back into the bushes, he’s immediately greeted with an unhappy look from Chikusa.

After all, Ryohei is loud. It hadn’t exactly been a difficult thing to overhear a bit of what was going on up there. Chikusa would be hard pressed to repeat the whole conversation verbatim, but he knows he’s gotten the gist of it. That’s why he’s not surprised when Ryohei flings himself out of the second story window, landing and rolling with the momentum almost into the wall around the perimeter of the tiny Japanese house.

Chikusa doesn’t say anything. He merely flops onto his side despite his injuries, refusing to speak as Ryohei comes barreling over. “Hey! Don’t lay like that, it’s extremely not good!”
junkyarddog: (I gotta admit I'm a little bit confused)

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-10-02 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Stupid four-eyed kappa," Ken huffs, gathering Chikusa into his arms as much because he knows Chikusa's just going to ragdoll like a sulky toddler through his as because he wants to move him out of the bushes and into the yard where Ryohei, he imagines, will have more room to see and to work his box. But the care he takes, the gentleness with which he scoops up his wounded partner to not make his injuries worse even though he knows Chikusa probably isn't feeling much pain, says a lot more than his mouth ever will.

He settles Chikusa on the lawn, sitting himself behind Chikusa and propping him upright against him, arms around his waist. He gives Ryohei a look of sullen defiance. "Fix him, byon."

It's desperation, and even Ryohei can probably tell that. Desperation, the massive extent of Chikusa's injuries, and Ken's own straightforward, reckless nature that probably makes him more likely than anyone else in the Kokuyo gang to go for the obvious solution of Ryohei's healing box even if it means asking for the assistance of the Vongola and possibly annoying Mukuro by doing so in the process. Chikusa wouldn't have been willing, and Chrome probably would have been too conscious of Mukuro's likely negative reaction to dare it.

But even if it's born of desperation...Ryohei may be conscious that he's been given a significant amount of trust here. Ken is asking him to fix this, and in doing so entrusting one of the most important things of his life to him. Honestly, the fact that Ken thought of anyone outside their group at all when at the end of his rope implies a subconscious trust in the Vongola he'd never admit to.

The whole time, it’s clear that Chikusa is down to his very bones reluctant and unhappy about this arrangement. Not in his face, as is usual, but in his body language as Ken gathers him up and drags him out into the lawn. Still…. Despite this fact, he’s obviously more at ease, too, with Ken right there against him. He’ll able to feel it, the looseness and lack of tension in Chikusa’s body when he’s pulled against Ken’s body although his eyes don’t leave Ryohei as the sun boxer kneels down besides them.

Chikusa’s obvious distrust doesn’t seem to bother Ryohei any. “It’ll extremely be okay,” he promises as he activates his box and pulls out the tool already glimmering with warm sun flames. It’s hard to say which of them he’s directing it to, although possibly both when he tries it on an unimpressed Chikusa and then to Ken like that will do any better. With a carefullness that some might not associate with the brazen teenager, he starts from the top along what minor injuries are visible on Chikusa’s face.

Boxer’s habit- he knows a lot about the dangers that even seemingly minor injuries can cause in the head.

Ken's shameless, no matter who he's around. So Ryohei's presence doesn't hold him back from turning his head to nuzzle Chikusa's temple, breathing in his scent, reassuring both of them with the gesture. Ryohei's free to think what he likes about it. He hardly seems to be paying attention to Ryohei himself; having handed responsibility over to someone with the power to handle things, he seems to have fully entrusted the matter to them.

He does glance at Ryohei after a moment. "It'll make his bones better, right?" He's not sure how the ring works. He knows you normally have to align broken bones if you want them to heal properly; will it restore Chikusa's knees to the way they should be even without getting them aligned first? He hopes so, but he's not sure.
kokuyoyo: (I mean I don't even call it a hangover)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-10-08 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Something like that is hard to miss, but.. Ryohei still seems to miss the implications of it, blinking as Ken’s nuzzle nudges Chikusa’s head a bit away from the sun flames. Neither of them seem particularly bothered that they’re just doing this so… Maybe it’s a foreigner thing! After all, despite their names, they’re not actually from Japan, right?

Just bros being bros.

At the question, however, he freezes up. Biology isn’t exactly his area of expertise, after all, but….

Chikusa sighs. “I told you we should have gone to Shamal.”

“Shamal only looks over girls!” Ryohei’s brow furrows as he pauses to look over Chikusa’s damaged legs again. Broken bones need to be set, right? And that’s just for limbs in general. He’s not sure about joints. “Maybe this sort of extreme injury needs to go to a hospital…” Against Ken’s body, Chikusa goes stiff.
junkyarddog: (I gotta admit I'm a little bit confused)

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-10-12 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
"No!" The word is fired from Ken's lips like a bullet, his arms tightening reflexively around Chikusa as though he expects him to be snatched from his arms. Hospitals have, on occasion, been required by himself and Chikusa, and there's nothing they hate more. The tubes, the needles, the people in lab coats in power over them - it's always a relived nightmare of Estraneo. And Chikusa's never been hurt quite so badly; Ken's terrified of how long he might have to be in there, what they might do to his partner. Worse, he's not sure mundane medicine can fix injuries this extensive; that's why he opted for box healing as a better solution in the first place.

"He can't go to a normal doctor, byon! They'll put him in casts and he'll be stuck there for months and he might not even heal right! Can't your stupid box heal everything?!"

He's as tense as piano wire. Even more than Chikusa, he's radiating terror, thinly masked by sound and fury. He's in his most dangerous state, one Chikusa's seen before on occasion - an animal at bay, ready to do just about anything to himself or to anyone else if it'll get him out of the situation he's cornered in.
kokuyoyo: (I don't do stupid things anymore.)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-10-14 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Correction: Ken is the most visibly terrified. Chikusa is just as much so, although it’s almost impossible to tell to most people. Still, however, his fingers have subtly but definitely started to dig into Ken’s clothing, clinging back to him as much as Chikusa is being clung to himself. His eyes still haven’t stopped focusing on Ryohei, keeping track of every single movement.

In the face of such open panic and silent but vicious distrust, Ryohei actually pauses as he stares at the two with a furrowed brow. He’s clearly doing what he doesn’t do most of the time, which is that he’s trying to think carefully about all of this. Finally, he gets up to his feet. “I’ll call Doctor Shamal!” he announces, louder than is really necessary. “So stay right there!!”

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-10-14 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This...is a solution that hadn't occurred to Ken. To not have to choose between Shamal or Ryohei, but to have both. He blinks at Ryohei for a moment, then glances at Chikusa as though looking for his more intelligent partner to find some flaw with this.

Ryohei doesn't seem to need any input on the matter, so Ken supposes if there's a problem, they can just leave while Ryohei's gone...but this sounds like a good plan to him, on the face of it.
kokuyoyo: (Woke up with a squirrel in my bed.)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-10-18 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ryohei really doesn’t need anymore input on the matter, because he goes running off back into the house- front door this time. That just leaves Ken and Chikusa back sitting on the lawn, Chikusa still shrunk back against Ken.

At least he seems to be giving some thought to it all, lips drawn tight together as he stares at the door Ryohei has just vanished through. For a few tense seconds, he thinks heavily. Eventually- “We’re not going to a hospital.” Like it really needs to be said for either of them.
junkyarddog: (Sometimes it seems to me)

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-10-19 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Damn right we're not, byon," Ken huffs, tugging Chikusa closer against his chest. He's shifted so that he's holding Chikusa more from the side than behind now, Chikusa's head pillowed against his shoulder.

Ken couldn't take a more overtly protective stance if he tried. Anyone who wants to take Chikusa to a hospital will have to knock him out or kill him to arrange it; that much is blindingly obvious.
kokuyoyo: (Woke up with a squirrel in my bed.)

[personal profile] kokuyoyo 2016-10-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
The good news is that when Ryohei comes bounding out of the house a few minutes later, he doesn’t seem intent on knocking Ken out and definitely not killing him. Instead, there’s a paper scrunched up in his hand that he glances at, just to remind himself of the basics of the conversation he’d just had. He does learn, after all.

“Doctor Shamal said that a sun flame would just make the healing go faster, but it wouldn’t set bones! They have to be set first! And he said that to find out the damage, we’d have to use an x-ray!”

“No,” is Chikusa’s immediate answer, sharper than his usual quietness. Ryohei’s face furrows in a frown.

“But-”

“No.”
junkyarddog: (Who was born in a house full of pain)

[personal profile] junkyarddog 2016-10-20 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
For once, it's Ken who has the more restrained, reasonable reaction. His eyes narrow at the words, but it's a second before he says anything.

"Does Shamal have one?" After all, Shamal was where Chikusa wanted to go first - had preferred it to Ryohei, in fact - and that doesn't count as a hospital. So maybe an x-ray can happen without an actual hospital visit.

But the dark realization is sinking in to Ken that, if they need this machine and they can only get one at a hospital...they'll have to go. Chikusa might refuse it on his own behalf, but Ken won't refuse anything that will fix Chikusa. It may be literally the last thing he ever wants to do, but they've had to endure it before and they can endure it again.
