Bogeyman that will snatch you up if you wander off the path in the forest. Tall, old trees that will give you good luck if you say a certain rhyme. An old building, or five, that are haunted with old ghosts.
Leave an offering at the large, old lake and, if you're in desperate need, you'll get something to help.
Most tales like that tend to be just what they are: tales told to children, or whispered for fun at night int he bar when the liquor has flowed long enough. All fun and games. That last one, however... In this little town, away from the larger cities, there seems to be some measure of truth. There's documentation, and even some items supposedly kept from where a local spirit, a water god of some sort, left them for some poor soul.
Well, there are skeptics, of course. The little valley the town resides in is notoriously foggy some seasons, and the water dark, reflective. Who's to say it's not been some well meaning prankster leaving things throughout the years? And for those who've been sick and miraculously recovered, well... There surely has to have been a logical explanation, just swept up in all the fantasy.
Either way, well. The lake, some distance away from the town with trees inbetween the two, is still rather beautiful. Even with its single island, situated right in the middle, it seems eerily still. There's no one here, not even at the little shrine along its coast....

Or at least there shouldn't be.
